Ducted vs Ductless Fume Hoods for Federal Labs

A ducted fume hood exhausts to outside the building and handles the chemistry most federal laboratories run. A ductless hood filters and recirculates, needs almost no building work, and carries a permanent filter obligation. The Two Machines Solve the Same Problem Differently


A ducted hood is a capture device attached to a building. Sash, baffles and work surface, then dedicated ductwork, a fan, and a discharge point on the roof. Nothing gets cleaned. The contaminated air leaves.


A ductless hood is a capture device attached to a filter. Air pulls in through the sash, passes through carbon or high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) media, and comes back out into the room the operator is standing in. That one difference drives what you can run in it, which trades you hire, and what you owe afterward.


What Each One Costs You in Building Work


Each line below gives the item first, then what a ducted hood requires, then what a ductless hood requires.


  • Exhaust path: ducted needs dedicated duct, a fan and a roof or wall discharge point; ductless needs none of it.

  • Roof and structure: ducted usually needs a penetration, a curb and support for the fan; ductless needs a bench that holds it.

  • Make-up air: ducted pulls conditioned air out and the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system has to replace it; ductless returns the air, so nothing leaves.

  • Room air balance: ducted changes the pressure relationship with adjacent spaces and has to be rebalanced; ductless does not shift it.

  • Electrical: ducted normally needs a hard-wired circuit for the hood and another for the fan; many ductless units run on standard building power.

  • Trades on site: ducted pulls in mechanical, sheet metal, roofing, electrical and test-and-balance; ductless is delivery, placement and power.

  • Consumables: ducted has no media to buy; ductless has media replaced for the life of the unit.

  • Moving it later: ducted is a construction project; ductless is a hand truck.


The honest reading: ductless wins every line except the one that decides the purchase. If the chemistry is not appropriate for recirculated air, none of those savings are available to you.


Filtration and Recertification Are Two Separate Obligations


Filtration is a consumable. A ductless hood's media loads up with whatever the lab puts through it, and when it is spent the hood stops protecting anyone. Somebody owns the replacement schedule, the budget line, and the disposal path for loaded media that may itself be regulated waste. That obligation runs for the life of the unit and appears nowhere on the purchase order.


Recertification is a test, not a part. Ducted hoods get face velocity and containment testing referenced to SEFA 1, the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association recommended practice for laboratory fume hoods. Biosafety cabinets get field certification referenced to NSF/ANSI 49. Both run on the cadence your chemical hygiene policy sets. Testing confirms the equipment still performs. It does not replace a filter.


The requirement underneath both: the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard at 29 CFR 1910.1450 requires a written Chemical Hygiene Plan and requires that protective equipment such as fume hoods actually function. It applies whatever your containment tier is, and the tier is a separate decision covered in what changes between BSL-1, BSL-2 and BSL-3.


How the Choice Moves Your Project Schedule


A ducted hood is sequenced with the building. The mechanical engineer sizes the exhaust, the design goes through review, roof work gets coordinated, and nothing can be commissioned until the fan, the make-up air and the test-and-balance are done. Each step sits on somebody else's critical path. A hood delivered early occupies floor space until the mechanical work catches up.


A ductless hood is sequenced with furniture. It arrives, it gets placed, it gets connected to power, and commissioning is the unit's own start-up check. When a research group must occupy a space before building work can be scheduled, that difference is the whole argument.


What we won't do is publish a lead time in weeks. It moves by manufacturer and by quarter, and a stale number in a specification is worse than none. You get a dated lead time with the quote.


When a Ductless Hood Is Genuinely the Right Call


Three situations, narrower than the sales pitch suggests. Teaching spaces running low hazard chemistry off a fixed material list. Mobile or temporary setups: a clinical trailer, a leased suite, a space the agency cannot modify. And point-of-use capture in buildings that will never get an exhaust penetration, which is why the portable fentanyl and opioid hoods supplied for corrections intake and evidence processing use the same filtered principle.


Outside those, on federal chemistry work, the answer is usually ducted. Saying otherwise to win a line item is how a facility ends up with a hood it cannot use.

Frequently Asked Questions


Can a ductless fume hood be used for federal chemistry work?


Sometimes, and the material list decides. A ductless hood returns filtered air to an occupied room, so it suits work where the chemicals are compatible with the media and quantities stay low. An open or changing material list generally forces a ducted hood, because a filter cannot be validated against chemicals nobody has listed.


Is a ductless hood cheaper overall?


Cheaper to install, not necessarily cheaper to own. You avoid duct, roof work, a fan and make-up air rework. You take on media, changeout labor and disposal for the life of the unit. On a long-lived installation those recurring costs can close the gap. On a leased space they usually do not.


What is the difference between a fume hood and a biosafety cabinet?


A chemical fume hood protects the operator from vapors and is not designed to protect the sample. A biosafety cabinet uses HEPA filtration to protect the operator, the sample and the environment from biological material. They are not substitutes, and buying one where the protocol calls for the other is a common and expensive error.


Who owns filter replacement after installation?


The facility, unless the contract says otherwise. Media is a consumable, not a warranty item, and the interval depends on what the lab runs through the hood. Put media, changeout labor and disposal into the same solicitation as the hardware so the obligation is funded from the start.


Does installing a ducted hood require a permit?


Usually, because it involves mechanical work, a roof or wall penetration and electrical work. The specifics belong to your authority having jurisdiction and the installation's facilities office. Confirm the review path before equipment is ordered, since permitting sits on the critical path.
