Ultimate Anti-Ligature & Correctional Furniture Procurement Guide

Updated: 5 days ago

Compliance reviewed by Onur Oncer, SDVOSB Materials compliance lead.

FURNITURE THAT KEEPS PEOPLE ALIVE

Anti-ligature, behavioral health, and corrections-grade furniture is not a sub-category of office furniture. It is a discipline with its own safety standards, its own engineering, its own failure modes, and its own consequences when the procurement is wrong. A picnic table in a state psychiatric ward is not "regular furniture you have to be careful with." It is a specific class of product engineered to remove ligature points, breakage points, weaponizable hardware, and ingestion hazards. The procurement question is which manufacturer's engineering has been validated for the population and the facility you are operating.

SDVOSB Justice, Health & Corrections is the corrections, behavioral health, and detention division of SDVOSB Materials Technology & Supply LLC. We supply, install, and project-manage anti-ligature furniture, weapons storage, evidence and staff lockers, overhead conveyor systems, and portable air-safety equipment for state DOC, federal BOP, ICE/DHS/DOJ, VA behavioral health, state psychiatric centers, county jails, and youth detention facilities. SDVOSB, HUBZone, and SDB certified. This page is the buyer's guide.

Important up front: we do not handle clothing.

Anti-Ligature Engineering: What "Compliant" Actually Means

Anti-ligature furniture has no single federal standard the way office seating has ANSI/BIFMA. Compliance is a combination of (a) manufacturer engineering specification, (b) facility-specific population risk assessment, and (c) clinical guidance from organizations like The Joint Commission and the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention.

What we look at on every spec:

  • Ligature points. No protrusions, hooks, or features that can support body weight via a ligature.

  • Breakage / weaponization. Materials and joints that do not fracture into edged or sharp pieces.

  • Ingestion hazards. Hardware, fastener, and finish choices that don't yield removable components small enough to be ingested.

  • Cleanability and infection control. Surfaces appropriate for behavioral health intake and clinical screening environments.

  • Tamper resistance. Concealed or proprietary fasteners; mounting methods that resist patient or inmate manipulation.

  • Population fit. Different products are validated for different populations. Adult corrections, juvenile detention, voluntary psychiatric, involuntary psychiatric, and geriatric behavioral health all have different engineering paths.

We do not specify a single manufacturer for every project. We match CORTECH, NORIX, PINEAPPLE, SPEC, Solace HealthCare, Moduform, COGG, or Durran to the population, the facility risk profile, and the procurement vehicle.

The Fentanyl Mitigation Capability

Property intake, mail screening, and evidence handling at federal and state corrections facilities expose staff to fentanyl and synthetic opioid contamination. The engineering control that addresses this is a portable fume hood properly sized for the facility's workflow. We integrate portable fentanyl / opioid fume hoods (supplied through our LabTECH Air sub-brand) into corrections procurement projects as a coordinated scope. Containment sizing follows the same specification logic we apply to federal laboratory fit-outs. This is one of the cleanest cross-division capabilities we offer.

How Procurement Officers Engage Us

  1. Send the requirement. SOW, drawings, or a description of the facility and population.

  2. We confirm scope and contract path. Set-aside eligibility, contract path, TIPS or a state cooperative if applicable.

  3. We quote. Line-item product, install, fentanyl mitigation if needed, project management.

  4. We deliver and install. Coordinated to the facility's security and operational requirements.

  5. We close out. Turnover documentation, warranty registration, spare-parts inventory.
